Encinitas Rotary News

Many of our first reactions were shock - shocked that Norm had not already received this award.  After the initial shock lifted, there was a solid five minutes of standing ovation.  The award could not have gone to a better candidate.  Dale Long, member since 1990, hosted the event.  We learned of Norm’s childhood, lifelong dedication to community service, and the City of Encinitas. Norm has been an active member of Rotary, since October, 1996.  He was president in 2005-2006, but the position he has held perennially, has been treasurer.  He took over the position almost immediately after he became a member and only took one year off to be president.  Although he has finally been relieved of the demanding Treasurer position, for the second time in eighteen years, his assisted to his replacement, Tracy Kaiser-Abrahamson, has been invaluable.  Many tributes at today’s ceremony elaborated on all of the things Norm does for this club, the City of Encinitas, and in particular every one of us as Rotarians.  Many times, he is the first person a new Rotarian gets to know, and all will attest that it is always a pleasure.  The best part of the ceremony was Norm, himself.  He is such a humble person, he was truly moved at the honor.   So join us in celebrating, Norm Nyberg, Rotary Club of Encinitas’s Rotarian of the Year.

President's Message

Let’s start with it is an honor to be President of this club with our 75 years plus of service here in Encinitas as well as to follow so many terrific people. I hope to continue, add to and rekindle some of our traditions and goals now and for the future. It is important to know where we came from, what we have done and yet to focus on the future and where we can go, be and do.

There are lots of worthy causes, both here locally and outside our club, district and country. I think it is incumbent on us to do the right thing, not for the press or individual accolades, but for the Rotary International Motto of Service Above Self. If we each practice that every day, enjoy our times together and on our own pet projects we cannot help but be successful and we all win. We joined Rotary to try and make a difference and for over 75 years we have, I don’t plan to stop us now.

Thanks for the honor of leading or whatever it is we do as President. Don’t forget we are all part of this Club and Rotary and enjoy the ride, the comradery, fellowship, spirit and doing good in our community and beyond and 2014/15 will be a success no matter what I do.

Let’s make this a year to remember, even if only in our hearts and minds. So for 2014/15, Light up Rotary, no comma.
